Bitcoin and the Kardashev Scale: a Type I Currency

The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization’s level of technological advancement, based on the amount of energy a civilization is able to use for communication. The scale is hypothetical, and regards energy consumption on a cosmic scale. It was proposed in 1964 by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev.

The scale has three designated categories: a Type I civilization (also called planetary civilization) can use and store energy which reaches its planet from the neighboring star, Type II can harness the energy of the entire star (the most popular hypothetic concept being the Dyson sphere—a device which would encompass the entire star and transfer its energy to the planet), and Type III civilization can control of energy on the scale of their entire host galaxy.

In an epic speech Dr. Micho Kaku, while pointing out that Humankind is still a Type 0 civilization, he is also predicting that we will be a Type I in less than 100 years. In this very moment, he says, we can already see examples of transition from Type 0 to Type I everywhere: Internet is a type I communication system, English is probably going to be a type I language, rock’n’roll is a type I music…

And here, ladies and gentlemen, comes Bitcoin… the first example of Type I currency!
